    Some effective preventative steps to help keep your gums healthy.

    The best way to prevent gum disease is to have an active maintenance routine. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day for approximately 2 minutes. Your maintenance routine should also include regular flossing and regular visits to the dentist once every 6 months.

    Your regular dental check-up is extremely important as you will receive a professional clean taking away any plaque buildup over this time period. Regular x-rays and a thorough examination will also allow our dentists to keep an eye out for any early signs of gums disease as well as allowing us to be able to advise you where your technique needs improvement.

    When you consume sugary or starchy foods and sweetened drinks, the bacteria in your mouth produces acid that attacks your tooth enamel. Saliva is your body’s natural defence to this acid, which is why chewing sugar free gum, rinsing your mouth with water and limiting your frequency of sweet and starchy foods can all be effective ways of preventing dental problems.

    • Gently clear the area around the tooth. Rinse the mouth with warm saltwater and if you can tolerate it, use dental floss to dislodge any food particles that have become trapped.
    • Hold a cold compress (such as ice wrapped in a clean cloth) to the outside of your mouth or jaw. This can help reduce any swelling.
    • Take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain medication. Clove oil can also give some pain relief – use a cotton tip to dab it directly on the tooth and the area around it.
    • Phone your dentist immediately and explain the situation. In emergency situations, we do our best to see patients as quickly as possible, including on weekends and after hours, so that we can provide both immediate relief and long-term treatment.
    • Depending on the cause of the toothache, you may need to return to the dentist after the pain and swelling have subsided, so that we can finish the treatment or address any underlying issues. It’s important to follow your dentist’s direction about follow-up appointments as they can stop the dreaded toothache from returning once again.
