Extraction may be required if broken, damaged or decayed. Our team will recommend the best course of action, in as little pain.
You should avoid drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours, as this can encourage bleeding and delay healing. Smoking is also to be avoided as this can dry out the extraction site resulting in dry socket. Eat and drink lukewarm food as normal, and avoid chewing on the affected area of your mouth.
Sometimes when a tooth has been broken down, damaged by decay or gum disease, or more commonly cracked from grinding or injury, extraction of the tooth may be the only option left.
Most dental extractions are routine and can be completed in the comfort of the clinic under local anesthetic with minimal swelling and down time for healing. In a small number of cases, the tooth’s position, size, shape and level of degradation may require a more complex surgical extraction. In some cases, they may even require a referral to a specialist.
At Complete Smiles Bella Vista, we pride ourselves on working with only the best specialist’s available, so you can always rest assured you’re in the best hands possible.
Some slight bleeding is normal for the first day or so. If you do notice bleeding, do not rinse your mouth. Apply pressure to the socket by biting firmly on a clean piece of folded cotton, such as a handkerchief, for at least 15 minutes. Failing this, biting down on a moist teabag can also induce blood clotting, helping to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding has not stopped after an hour or two, it’s important to contact the friendly and caring staff at Complete Smiles Bella Vista and well get you in as soon as possible.

What should I do after the dental extractions?
We encourage as much rest as possible whilst trying to keep your head upright to avoid any bleeding, it may also be a good idea to sleep with an extra pillow at night, keeping your head raised to minimize any possible bleeding. Avoid rinsing for the first 24 hours to help your mouth start the healing process. After this time, use a salt-water mouthwash for at least a week to help heal the socket.
Keep your mouth and the extraction site as clean as possible, making sure that the socket is kept clear of all food and debris. Some patients also choose to take a Vitamin C supplement to aid healing.
